Football Player Quiz: 10 Questions & Answers

You know the names. How well do you know the places in their careers? This football player quiz follows ten players through early clubs, European moves and memorable matches. Every answer is a city or town, so you can practise the kind of place-finding that matters in Next Stop Goal. The questions cover men’s and women’s football, from Salah and Ronaldo to Miedema and Kerr.

Guess a city or town before opening each answer. Award yourself one point for each correct place, for a total out of ten. There is no timer or account needed. This is a standalone practice quiz, separate from today’s daily round; your score here is not recorded or sent to the leaderboard. Some questions ask where a club is based, while others ask where a particular match happened. Read that distinction carefully.

Can you place these players’ football stories?

  1. 01Salah’s first European move

Mohamed Salah moved from Egypt to Europe in 2012. Which Swiss city became home to his first European club?

Show answer: Salah’s first European move

    Basel, Switzerland

Salah joined FC Basel before his later spells with Chelsea, Fiorentina, Roma and Liverpool. Liverpool’s account of that move describes his transition to European football. The place we want is the Swiss club’s home city.

Map tip: Start with Switzerland. A later club in a player’s career can be a tempting distraction when the question asks about an earlier move.

  2. 02Ronaldo’s competitive Sporting debut

Cristiano Ronaldo made his first competitive Sporting appearance against Inter on 14 August 2002. In which Portuguese city did Sporting host that Champions League qualifier?

Show answer: Ronaldo’s competitive Sporting debut

    Lisbon, Portugal

UEFA’s retrospective places the goalless qualifier in Lisbon. This was a competitive first-team appearance at Sporting’s old Alvalade ground, rather than a friendly or Ronaldo’s later Champions League group-stage debut.

Map tip: A club can move stadiums within the same city. For this city question, you do not need to identify the old ground’s exact location.

  3. 03Bellingham’s first senior club

Jude Bellingham made his senior club debut in 2019, aged 16. Which English city was his first club based in?

Show answer: Bellingham’s first senior club

    Birmingham, England

Bellingham began his senior club career with Birmingham City. England’s official profile records his first-team breakthrough at 16. This question asks for his club’s home city, rather than the ground that hosted his debut.

Map tip: Separate a club’s home from the ground hosting a particular fixture. An away appearance does not change the city the club represents.

  4. 04Mbappé’s first Champions League goal

Kylian Mbappé scored his first Champions League goal for Monaco on 21 February 2017. In which English city was that away match played?

Show answer: Mbappé’s first Champions League goal

    Manchester, England

Mbappé scored during Monaco’s 5–3 defeat by Manchester City. UEFA records the game at the City of Manchester Stadium. The answer follows the host of that match, rather than Monaco’s home.

Map tip: When the clue describes an away match, locate the host city. The scorer’s club badge alone will point you to the wrong place.

Official source: UEFA: Mbappé’s Monaco breakthrough

  5. 05De Bruyne’s Belgian beginnings

Before Chelsea and Manchester City, Kevin De Bruyne made his senior first-team debut in Belgium in May 2009. Which city was that first club based in?

Show answer: De Bruyne’s Belgian beginnings

    Genk, Belgium

De Bruyne’s first senior club was KRC Genk. Manchester City’s signing profile traces his first-team emergence there in 2009. The question concerns Genk’s home city, rather than De Bruyne’s birthplace or a later transfer destination.

Map tip: Similar-looking place names can distract you. Check that the map label says Genk before settling on your answer.

Official source: Manchester City: De Bruyne’s early career

  6. 06Son’s first Bundesliga club

Before Bayer Leverkusen and Tottenham, Son Heung-min played for his first Bundesliga club. Which German city was that club based in?

Show answer: Son’s first Bundesliga club

    Hamburg, Germany

Son broke into the senior team at Hamburger SV in 2010. Tottenham’s career profile follows that first Bundesliga chapter. We are asking for Hamburg, the club’s home, rather than the venue of any particular debut or goal.

Map tip: A question about a club’s base is different from one about where a player scored. First decide which kind of place the clue needs.

Official source: Tottenham Hotspur: Son’s career profile

  7. 07Pedri before Barcelona

Pedri made his senior first-team debut for UD Las Palmas in August 2019. Which Canary Islands city is that club based in?

    Show answer: Pedri before Barcelona

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain

FIFA’s profile records Pedri’s first-team debut for UD Las Palmas at 16. The club is on Gran Canaria. That career stop is distinct from Tegueste on Tenerife, where Pedri grew up, and from his later move to Barcelona.

Map tip: Find the correct island before looking for its city. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are different places within the Canary Islands.

Official source: FIFA: Pedri’s first-team breakthrough

  8. 08Lewandowski’s Polish title

Robert Lewandowski won the Polish league and finished as its top scorer in 2009/10. Which Polish city was his club based in?

    Show answer: Lewandowski’s Polish title

    Poznań, Poland

Lewandowski won that title with Lech Poznań before moving to Borussia Dortmund. UEFA’s profile connects his scoring season with Lech’s championship. The answer is the club’s home city, not a later home in Germany or Spain.

Map tip: Poznan and Poznań refer to the same city. Map labels may omit the accent, so focus on the place rather than the spelling style.

Official source: UEFA: Lewandowski’s early career

  9. 09Miedema’s senior breakthrough

Vivianne Miedema made her senior debut in September 2011, aged 15. Which Dutch town is home to the club where she began her senior career?

    Show answer: Miedema’s senior breakthrough

    Heerenveen, Netherlands

Miedema started her senior career at SC Heerenveen. Manchester City’s profile records her breakthrough there at 15. This question concerns the club’s home town; it does not ask which ground hosted her first senior match.

Map tip: Do not substitute a player’s birthplace for their first club’s home. They describe different parts of the same career story.

Official source: Manchester City: Miedema’s first senior club

  10. 10Kerr’s move to Chelsea

Chelsea announced Sam Kerr’s signing in November 2019, ahead of her arrival during the 2019/20 season. Which English city became her club home?

Show answer: Kerr’s move to Chelsea

    London, England

Kerr joined Chelsea after playing for Perth Glory and Chicago Red Stars. Chelsea’s announcement set out her arrival for the second half of the 2019/20 season. We are looking for Chelsea’s home city, rather than the date or venue of her debut.

Map tip: A city can contain several clubs and grounds. Naming London answers this question; locating a specific Chelsea stadium would be a different task.

Three ways to read a player clue

Choose the right career chapter

Birthplace, youth club, first senior club and a later transfer are different locations. Look for the date and the stage of the career before deciding where to search.

Check club home versus match venue

A debut may happen away from home. If the question asks where a club is based, find its home city. If it asks where a match happened, follow the host or the named ground instead.

Find the place before adding precision

These ten questions ask for cities or towns. In the daily map game, read whether the clue asks for a city, a stadium or another landmark, then zoom in far enough to place the pin you intend.
